ALOA's Living Stones Society builds on a significant biblical theme and image of the body of Christ as expressed by St. Paul and St. Peter. In his first letter to the church at Corinth, the Apostle Paul explains the commission given to him saying that like a skilled master builder a firm foundation had been laid, which is Jesus Christ. Each one is to build upon the firm foundation with care for we are God's Temple and God's Spirit dwells within us.

St. Peter builds on the image and invites all to "Come to him, to that living stone, though rejected by men but in God's sight chosen and precious; and like stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house…" (I Peter 2:4,5a).

The ALOA Living Stones Society gathers together ALOA members and friends in a common purpose and commitment. It recognizes them and expresses gratitude for their generosity through their annual gifts. The ALOA Living Stones Society recognizes gifts as follows:

The capstone is the top stone capping off a structure or project; capstone gifts are a crowning stroke insuring that ALOA fulfills its mission. A capstone gift helps provide extra services and outreach to congregations, LCMS districts and ELCA synods.

As a milestone marks progress from one point to another, or a turning point representing a major accomplishment, milestone gifts are invaluable to ALOA. They allow ALOA to move into new programming areas by providing funds for strategic planning and leadership development.

The keystone is the stone of an arch that locks and holds it together and is a central supporting element of he whole. Keystone gifts make it possible for ALOA to communicate with its membership through the newsletter, news releases to church judicatories and multiple other media venues. It is important to share the mission and activities of ALOA.

Every project relies on a criterion or standard for measuring success. Touchstones are used to test the quality of materials in building projects just as touchstone gifts affirm a valued partnership in ALOA's mission to, with and for older Lutherans. Many, many Touchstone gifts are required each year to maintain ALOA's Operations Center.
